When living off-grid it is not always desirable or practical to use normal domestic appliances on a 240v AC Inverter, in fact for safety reasons lighting should always be run off the batteries direct. Water heating Element Immersion Heater 1" NPT 12v/24v 600watt

Can be used direct with batteries, solar panels, hydroelectric generators, as a wind turbine dump diversion load.  Can also be used as a solar panel dump load.Fits standard water heaters with a 1" NPT or your own custom heater tank.They are constructed with solid brass base and copper, then the element is nickel plated for long life.

Heat water directly using a wind turbine generator (with or without a battery bank). Wind turbine generators are used primarily for electricity generation.

In very strong winds, and/or when the batteries are fully charged a wind turbine may generate more current than the batteries can handle. Therefore a dump load is often used to divert the extra energy to heat water so it is not wasted and so that the wind turbine does not spin so quickly that it is damaged.Note: If you have a gas hot water heater you may wish to put an electric unit ahead of it. This way the gas heater is always being fed hot water so it does not turn on as often and for shorter periods of time when it does.

Diversion Load Water HeatingPictured below is a typical 12 Volt water heating element which can be screwed into an immersion heater draincock hole. When used as a diversion (dump) load, such an element is connected to the batteries via a charge regulator. When the regulator detects that the batteries are fully charged, it diverts the generated electricity to the element which heats the water.

We supply a range of Permanent Magnet Alternators providing a means for our clients to build, high power generators for wind turbines and Water Windmills. The Permanent Magnet generator can give output currents in excess of 50Amps at less than 2000 revolutions per minute. These type of generators (PMA's) have permanent magnets rotors unlike a standard auto alternator which loses a lot of power generating the magnetic field on the rotor coils. By removing the rotor coils and changing it for a permanent magnet rotor avoids this power loss. Generators come in two types DC and three phase, both can provide excellent charging systems for off grid homes or workshops.

C5,C20 & C100

Question: What is the C5, C20 and C100 rating on leadacid batteries?

A battery with a 100ah rating at C100 can give 1 Amp over 100 hours until its totally flat.
A battery with a 100ah rating at C20 can give 5 Amps over 20 hours until its totally flat.
A battery with a 100ah rating at C5 can give 20 Amps over 5 hours until its totally flat.Although the three batteries have the same ampere hour rating they are not the same when it comes to their ability to discharge and recharge...The C100 battery with a 20 amp load will not last very long at all.

The C5 battery with a 20 amp load will last much much longer than the C20 batteryThe difference between all three batteries is howfast you can convert the stored chemical energy back into electrical energy or energy back into a stored chemical electrolyte, C5 is the best and most efficient, C20 is not as good as the C5, C100 is the least efficient.The “C” is the total efficiency of the batteries electrolyte and battery structure, the 5, 20 & 100 is the number of hours you can discharge the battery until flat.Example a C5 100ah can sustain a bigger load than a C20 100ah so if you wish to run a high current inverter say 2000 watt, then the C5 battery is allround better choice than the C20 and infinity better than a C100. TheC5 has the electrolyte and battery structure to discharge and charge quicker than a C20 or C100.

Forklift trucks use lead acid batteries and they need to have a high charge and discharge rate and the ideal rating for these work horses is C5. This type of battery pack is used every day for a solid 8 hours and charged back up over night, 7 days a week.The cheapest batteries are the C100 as their structure, lead content and electrolyte are cheaper, this can be confirmed by the overall weight difference, the more expensive and heaviest batteries are the C5. The best overall Solar battery banks are either, second hand or new Forklift truck batteries C5.So when looking to buy a solar battery set and your comparing prices remember to take into account the “C” rating, a C100 may look like a bargain but you will regret at your leisure when the bargain turns out to be an expensive dud. For solar panels or wind turbine installations a C5 is the best buy.
